Professional competence in pharmacy refers to the knowledge, skills, behaviours and attitudes which are required to enable you to carry out your duties and responsibilities in accordance with the professional standards expected by the PSI.
Guidance on professional standards expected in pharmacy is available from the Code of Conduct and various PSI Guidance and Pharmacists have a legal responsibility to maintain their professional competence subsequent to the Pharmacy Act 2007.
A Core Competency Framework (CCF) has been published by the PSI and is central to every registered pharmacist’s CPD. The CCF is divided into six domains of practice and identifies a number of competencies expected of a pharmacist in each domain of practice. A number of behavioural statements are given for each competency to demonstrate how individuals who have that competency will be behaving in practice. The Core Competency Self-Assessment tool (CCSAT) has been developed by the IIOP to assist pharmacists with evaluating their CPD requirements in relation to the CCF.
